Why visit Chania, Crete. Holidays in Chania, Crete

Chania, Crete : A Magical Destination for holidays

“We travel for romance, we travel for architecture, and we travel to be lost”, the writer Ray Branbury famously said, and we totally agree. If you want to experience all these, then just visit Chania, one the most beautiful and captivating towns of Crete.

Chania is well known for the Venetian Harbor, the old port, and the narrow alleys of the old town. The museums, the cozy cafés, and the old building – of Venetian and Ottoman design- will give you the impression that you live in another era.

How to get there

By plane
Chania has an International airport, that can be reached from many cities from the rest of Europe. Although, it is important, if you don’t drive, to get a taxi to go to the city, because the buses from the airport to the city are almost no-existent.

By ferry
In daily basis there are ferries from Athens (Piraeus Port) to Souda, the port for ferries for Chania, which is only few kilometers away from the city. Ferry tickets are available in all travel agencies around Greece.

What to see & do

The old Venetian Harbor: As it is mentioned above, one of the most attractive places in Chania is the Old Venetian Harbor. Along the Old Harbor is full of restaurants, cafés, traditional shops and night clubs. That makes it also the busiest part of the old town where tourists and locals can enjoy themselves during day and night. It is worth noting that the monuments of the Old Harbor have been preserved since the Venetian rule period (1252-1645), the Ottoman rule (1645-1898), and the period of the Egyptian domination (1831-1841) that occurred during the period of the Turkish rule.

Naval Museum (Maritime Museum): Visit this great Museum and you will get the chance to learn the Crete’s old relationship with the Sea. Video presentations, photos, nautical equipment, and unique model of ships will make this experience special. The museum is open daily (10.00 to 14.00) except Monday and the admission is 2,50 euros.

Archaeological Museum: The museum contains archeological finds from Neolithic times through to the Roman era. Especially, it contains a wide range of Minoan Ceramics, gold jewelry, sculpture, painted burial urns, clay tablets with inscriptions, and vases. The museum is located in the former Venetian Monastery of Saint Francis at 25 Chalidon Street. It is open daily from 8.00 to 17.00 (to 19.30 April-October), except Monday.

What is more, there are breathtaking places outside Chania which really worth to visit, especially those who love nature.

Visit Samaria Gorge, one of the most picturesque attractions in Crete. Wear comfortable shoes and get ready for the adventure. It is 18km long and to get there you should take a bus to Omalos. To return back to Chania is needed to take the ferry from either Sougia village or Sfakia.

Besides, only few kilometres outside Chania is a small and beautiful village called Therissos, which really deserves to visit it. In addition, for relaxing and enjoying the sun we strongly recommend boat trips to Balos or Elafonisi, beautiful beaches with turquoise waters.
